One of the biggest decisions a couple will make when planning their wedding is their photographer. It’s important to find a wedding photographer who matches your vibe and can capture memories of your big day in a way that tells your story and in the way that you remember it. Enter: editorial wedding photography. As an editorial style wedding photographer capturing couples in the Philadelphia,PA, area and beyond, I can confidently say I’m not for everyone. Editorial is a niche style and it’s important to understand its distinguishing characteristics before committing. Let’s get into it!
No matter what social media platforms you use, you’ve likely heard the latest wedding photography buzz word: editorial style. It’s not a new concept but this generation of engaged couples have brought a lot of attention to this style, and it’s not your mother’s wedding photographer. So, what is it?
The definition of editorial that most people are familiar with is related to newspapers or magazines known for -you guessed it- stories. Similarly, editorial style wedding photography tells a story, your story, whatever that looks like for you in a manner that would fit quite comfortably on the glossy pages of a magazine spread.
I would consider this style an elevated process to traditional wedding photography. All of the details of my couples’ wedding day come together in a way that embraces their beauty and highlights their best features. The goal is to capture visually captivating images through a creative lens that is cohesive with your aesthetic while creating a narrative of your day.
These are more than just photos. An editorial gallery tells the story of your wedding day from a different perspective. You’ll note candid shots, some blurred images to add an artistic flare or better explain the story, or even loads of color if that’s your thing. This is all done with intentionality behind the design choices.
Remember when I said I’m not for everyone? That’s not a bad thing! Just like the style of dress or the florals you choose for bouquets, photography styles are individualized. So, who are my people?
The experience as a whole with an editorial photographer is different from what you might find with professionals with more traditional styles. Editorial is less manicured and directed than other styles, but you’ll still be left with high-value, beautiful images of your day as you envisioned it. Each gallery is conceptualized, a word you’ll see frequently to describe the style. Each couple, along with their weddings are individualized concepts, and editorial photography celebrates this. You won’t find one-size-fits-all poses, or lots of posing at all, really.
As your photographer, I won’t leave you flying blind, but instead will be sure to direct scenes as needed for lighting and to ensure a combination of spontaneity and styled elegance. Authenticity is key, whatever that looks like for you!
Since the editorial wedding photography has gained more attention in recent years, there are very specific aspects of the style that tend to come to mind for people when it’s mentioned. You may be picturing all white or neutral everything, high fashion poses, or there may even be a specific shot you’ve seen that you automatically associate with the style. While those things can be true, they aren’t a requirement.
Color and maximalism as well as minimal neutrals can coexist within editorial photography, and you can see proof of it in this shoot by From the Daisies. After all, both Betsey Johnson and Alexander McQueen designs have graced the pages of Vogue, haven’t they?
Wrong again! Imagine me as an active participant in your day. I’m there in the midst of all of the fun, but also in the quiet moments for portraits. Yes, some directing will happen, but there will also be plenty of raw, candid shots of your day with plenty of movement.
When shopping for your wedding photographer, please keep in mind that you are going to be entrusting this person with an incredibly meaningful, intimate day. It’s important that you can feel comfortable & connected with them in a way that allows you to trust them completely. When you’re able to let go & trust the process, the results are photos that are packed with emotion
Having an editorial wedding photographer means you’re open to trusting their creative process, that embraces fashion and style while still allowing for it to be candid & true to your unique day. My clients and I create art together when they’re able to fully trust my vision. A great example of this is Joy & Brandon’s Cameron Estate Inn Wedding.
